Bros: I am getting new tires for my car and they are currently 245/40's but I want to move up to 255/40's. Is that totally dumb or should I just stick with the stock size?

The width on the front my my ISF is upped from 2 25 to 245 which adds cost, but is worth it on my fun car I don’t drive a lot. On a DD that you don’t really go and drive hard, not worth it.

Seems like it would work if you’ve got room. The tires would be a bit larger diameter, so your speedometer would probably understate your speed by 3-4%, which is not ideal, but seems manageable. Probably you’ll be paying more for rubber as well.

What’s the width on the wheels? If you go too wide on a narrow wheel, initial turn in gets a little squishy.

what’s your wheel width?
If it’s a DD it’s not worth it. You won’t notice the difference.

What’s the car, what’s the wheel width, what’s the importance of gas mileage, what’s the objective you’re trying to achieve?

I’ve bumped up my tire width a size or two as well, I typically go as wide as will fit for my vehicles. Performance is good, but it’s more for appearances. I just prefer a wide tire, but as others have said, not too wide for the wheel or it gets a bit squishy.
Not much of a difference to the speedo either.

It’s probably fine. I went from 225/75 to 235/75 recently and I haven’t had problems

Stock tire size on my 3 is 225 in the front. I've got 245s on now cause I had an extra pair.

Do you have any particular reason for using the new size? What are you looking for in a tire?
